Travel in the Time of COVID: Europe 2021- Spain III

Communidad de Andalucia: Nerja (region of Malaga)

About 90 minutes across the southern coast of Spain from Almeria, in a region referred to as the Costa del Sol, you find the town of Nerja. It sits atop rocky cliffs, and is called the “Balcony of Europe” since it juts into the Mediterranean, providing sweeping views across the sea.

It offers winding, cobblestone streets, beaches in protected coves (down a lot of steps), many shops and vendors, and what must be the Irish pub with the best view.

The area was settled in pre-historic times, evidenced by cave paintings near the entrance to the vast caverns visited by throngs of tourists. The caverns themselves are spectacular, filled with stalagmites and stalactites that create images and leave you with a sense of another world.

It was later a home to a Roman town, and was amongst the first areas controlled by the Moors in the 8thcentury, who named the settlement for its abundant springs.

It is a great place to just relax and “be”, wandering, shopping and enjoying any beverage of choice.
